Jennifer Connelly joins Alita Battle AngelProduction is already underway on Robert Rodriguez’s anticipated adaptation of the Battle Angel Alita manga series, Alita: Battle Angel. Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) stars as the titular lead. And now we’ve got a new villain in the form of Jennifer Connelly.

THR reports that Connelly has joined the cast of the ambitious sci-fi blockbuster, which is being eyed as a possible new franchise for Fox. Mahershala Ali and Jackie Earle Haley are both already on board as villain characters, and adding Connelly into the mix sounds like a great addition alongside them. She’s a brilliant actress, and it should be great to see her doing something like this. Courtesy of Amazon, here’s a synopsis for the first omnibus volume of Yukito Kishiro’s manga.

When Doc Ido, a talented cyber-physician, finds Alita’s head in a junk heap, she has lost all memory of her past life. But when he reconstructs her, she discovers her body still instinctively remembers the Panzer Kunst, the most powerful cyborg fighting technique ever known. In the post-apocalyptic world of the Scrapyard, as the secrets of Alita’s past unfold, each day is a struggle for survival.

Keean Johnson, Ed Skrein, Lana Condor, and Christoph Waltz complete the leading cast. Given that production started back in October last year, it seems likely that Connelly is coming on for quite a small villainous role in the first film which will be developed into a bigger role through the franchise, should the first movie be a success.

Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids) is behind the camera with a script penned by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Terminator Genisys). James Cameron (Avatar, The Terminator) has been developing this at Fox for more than a decade, and I can’t wait to see it finally come to fruition.

Connelly is coming off the back of starring in Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut, American Pastoral, and recently starred in her husband Paul Bettany’s directorial debut, Shelter. Next up on her slate is Joseph Kosinski’s Granite Mountain, a possible awards contender later this year starring Miles Teller, Taylor Kitsch, James Badge Dale, Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, and Andie MacDowell.

Alita: Battle Angel is currently set to hit cinemas on July 20th, 2018.
